Tree work in Coogee — beachside suburb, strict council rules

The Living Canopy is based in North Narrabeen on the Northern Beaches and travels regularly to Coogee for tree removal, pruning, stump grinding and related work. You call us, you get Alex Price — the qualified arborist who turns up, looks at your trees and carries out the job. There's no booking system or crew you don't know. Just a straight conversation about what's needed and what it will cost.

Coogee is a beachside suburb with a mix of apartments, semi-detached houses and freestanding homes, and the tree work here reflects that variety. Some jobs are in spacious gardens on larger blocks; others are in tight courtyard spaces where removing or pruning a single tree requires careful planning and controlled technique. We've worked in both contexts across many Eastern Suburbs jobs, and the assessment visit is where we work out exactly what the job requires before committing to a price.

One thing anyone working on trees in Coogee needs to understand is that Randwick City Council has a well-earned reputation for thorough tree protection. The council takes unauthorised tree removal seriously and the consequences can be significant — not just financially, but in terms of the relationship with neighbours and the broader community. We don't take shortcuts around the permit process, and we advise every client accurately on what consent is required before we touch a tree. That includes advising when work genuinely doesn't require a permit, which is equally useful.

The oceanside location also means we're mindful of the environmental context. The Coogee foreshore reserve and the surrounding coastal environment have ecological significance, and trees in these areas receive additional scrutiny. Properties near Gordon's Bay and the coastal walk can have tree situations that involve both council and potentially other regulatory considerations. If your property is in one of these locations, raise it when you call — we'll factor it into the assessment.

Trees & vegetation in Coogee

Coogee's tree population reflects a suburb that has been developed over many decades, with a mix of established gardens and newer plantings. Native species that suit the coastal conditions — Angophora costata (Sydney Red Gum), Banksia integrifolia (Coastal Banksia) and various Melaleuca species — appear on larger allotments and in the more established garden character streets. The Coastal Banksia is particularly well-suited to Coogee's conditions, tolerating sandy soils and salt exposure, and where it grows to its full size it can be a significant specimen requiring proper arborist management rather than simply a chainsaw.

Ornamental and exotic species are also well established across the suburb. Liquidambars, Jacarandas and various Ficus species are common in the residential streets, with some of the larger Figs having been growing for generations. Cocos Palms are widespread — the dropped fronds and seed pods are a frequent maintenance issue, particularly where they overhang driveways and pools. Hedge species including Murraya, Lilly Pilly and Photinia are common throughout, and these need regular professional trimming to stay tidy. The established gardens of Coogee's freestanding housing stock often contain a genuine mix of well-suited and poorly-placed trees — sometimes both.

Randwick City Council tree permits

Coogee is within the Randwick City Council local government area. Randwick Council has a detailed tree protection framework and is known for actively enforcing it. Under their Development Control Plan, you need development consent before removing or significantly pruning any tree with a height of 5 metres or more, a trunk circumference of 50 cm or more measured at 1 metre above ground, or a canopy spread of 3 metres or more. Applications need to clearly document the tree species, its condition, why the work is proposed, and the expected impact.

The council's reputation for thorough assessment means it's worth getting the application right the first time rather than going back and forth. We prepare arborist reports that address the assessment criteria clearly and give applications a solid factual basis. If a tree is hazardous or causing genuine structural damage, there are consent pathways that apply — but the process still needs to be followed. We do not carry out work that requires a permit without one in place. The fines for unauthorised tree work in Randwick are real and the council has local officers who are across what's happening in the area.

Common questions

Questions about tree work in Coogee

Is Randwick City Council really stricter than other councils about tree permits?

Randwick Council does have a detailed DCP and a known track record of enforcing it. They have local officers and take unauthorised tree removal seriously. The permit thresholds are not unusually high — trees of 5 metres or more in height, 50 cm trunk circumference or canopy spread of 3 metres are captured — but the application process is thorough and the penalties for bypassing it are significant. If you're unsure whether your tree needs a permit, the answer in Coogee is to assume it probably does until confirmed otherwise. We check this at the quoting visit.

A tree is damaging my fence or foundations — does that speed up the permit process?

Demonstrated damage to structures can support a consent application, but it doesn't mean you can bypass the process. Randwick Council will still require an application with supporting documentation, and in some cases may want to inspect the site themselves. We prepare arborist reports that document the damage, the condition of the tree and the recommended course of action, which gives the application a factual basis for approval. Start the process early — waiting until the damage is critical doesn't make the approval faster.

Can I just trim the branches hanging into my yard from a neighbour's tree?

Under NSW law you can cut back branches to the boundary at your own expense, without council consent, provided the work doesn't affect the health or structural integrity of the tree. However, if the tree is a protected species or meets the Randwick DCP thresholds, there can be additional considerations. We can advise on the specific situation during the site visit. It's always worth a conversation before picking up a saw.

Do you work near the Coogee foreshore and coastal walk?

Yes. Properties near the foreshore, Gordon's Bay and along the coastal walk corridor are areas we cover. Trees in coastal foreshore areas may have additional environmental considerations beyond the standard council DCP, and we factor this into the assessment. If your property backs onto reserve land or is in a sensitive coastal location, mention it when you call so we come prepared.
