Clean, precise hedges — residential and commercial

Hedges are one of the most common and visible features of a well-maintained garden, and the difference between a tidy, well-clipped hedge and one that's overgrown or unevenly cut is immediately obvious. Whether you have a low garden border hedge or a tall formal screen several metres high, The Living Canopy provides neat, professional trimming across Sydney's Northern Beaches and greater Sydney.

Technique matters when it comes to hedges. Cutting at the wrong angle, cutting too hard into old wood, or simply using blunt equipment can result in dead patches, uneven regrowth and a hedge that never quite recovers its form. We use sharp, clean equipment on every job and work to achieve a consistently level, crisp finish — whether you want a straight formal line, a rounded top or a more natural, softly shaped appearance.

We trim all species commonly found in Northern Beaches gardens: Lilly Pilly, Murraya, Photinia, Box and Buxus, Camellia, native Banksias, Pittosporum, Viburnum, Escallonia and more. Formal shapes and topiary work are also available for clients who want something a little more sculptural. For large-scale commercial sites — body corporates, businesses, schools or parks — we offer scheduled maintenance contracts to keep hedges looking sharp throughout the year.

As a general guide, fast-growing species like Lilly Pilly and Murraya often benefit from trimming two to three times per year during the growing season, while slower-growing hedges may only need attention once or twice annually. We're happy to recommend a schedule based on your specific species and how you want your hedges to look. Whether you need a regular maintenance visit or a one-off tidy-up, all clippings are removed from site and the area is swept clean at the end of every job.

Hedge types we work with

  • Lilly Pilly, Murraya and Photinia — popular privacy screens and fast growers
  • Box and Buxus — formal clipped hedges and topiary shapes
  • Camellia — flowering hedges requiring careful timing
  • Native Banksias and Grevilleas — natural informal screens
  • Pittosporum and Viburnum — versatile privacy hedges
  • Commercial hedges — body corporates, schools, businesses and parks

Frequently asked questions

How often should hedges be trimmed?

Most hedges benefit from 2–3 trims per year. Fast-growing species like Lilly Pilly and Photinia may need more; slower growers like Murraya might only need one or two a year. We'll give you a realistic maintenance schedule at the quote stage.

Can overgrown hedges be brought back into shape?

Yes, in most cases. Renovation pruning works well on species like Lilly Pilly, Camellia and Box. Some species don't respond well to hard cutting — we'll advise on what's realistic for your hedge at the site visit.

Do you remove all the clippings?

Yes. All clippings are cleared from site, leaving a clean finish every time. If you'd prefer clippings left as mulch in garden beds, just let us know.

Can you trim hedges of any height?

Yes — we're equipped to work on hedges up to several metres tall, using elevated work platforms where necessary. We quote on height and length, with the price reflecting the access equipment required.
