Mosman's trees are distinctive — and need careful handling

We're based on the Northern Beaches at North Narrabeen, and Mosman is one of the North Shore suburbs we work in regularly. The drive across from the Beaches takes us through some of Sydney's best harbour landscape, and Mosman itself never disappoints — it's one of those suburbs where the trees genuinely define the streetscape and the feel of the place. Large established gardens, elevated positions with harbour and Middle Harbour views, prestige properties sitting under significant canopy. It's the kind of suburb where the trees matter, and where poorly executed tree work stands out.

Mosman sits on a peninsula with Middle Harbour to the west and Sydney Harbour to the east, and that position shapes the tree species you'll encounter. The sandstone ridge lines and deep gullies are home to large Angophora costata (Sydney Red Gum) specimens — some of the biggest you'll find this close to the city. These trees are visually stunning but they do drop heavy limbs without warning, particularly during dry periods following wet spells. We carry out proper hazard assessments and can advise on deadwooding and crown reduction that reduces risk while keeping the tree structurally sound and aesthetically intact.

The large established gardens in Mosman also contain an impressive range of ornamental and exotic species accumulated over a century of prestige residential development. Ficus macrophylla (Moreton Bay Fig) is a notable presence — some specimens in Mosman are genuinely heritage-significant, with root systems that spread far beyond the canopy. We know how to assess these trees, how to work around the root systems without causing long-term damage, and when removal or containment is genuinely the right call. Canary Island Date Palms, large ornamental figs, mature camphor laurels and London plane trees all feature in Mosman gardens, and we handle all of them.

Working in Mosman also means navigating tight access on some properties — steep driveways, narrow side passages, mature gardens with overhead lines. We carry the right equipment and have the rigging skills to remove or prune trees in confined spaces without damaging surrounding structures, fences or garden beds. Access is often what separates an arborist who can do the job from one who quotes it and then finds excuses on the day. We assess access honestly at the quote stage so there are no surprises.

Trees & vegetation in Mosman

Mosman's tree canopy reflects both its sandstone geology and its long history of prestige residential development. The dominant native canopy species on the ridge lines and gully edges is Angophora costata (Sydney Red Gum), with its characteristic smooth, pale-orange bark and sculptural branching structure. These trees can reach considerable height and spread in Mosman's established gardens, and they are among the most common species we are called to assess for hazard, deadwooding or crown reduction. Ficus macrophylla (Moreton Bay Fig) is also a defining Mosman species — large specimens occur in the suburb's parks and heritage gardens, and their surface root systems require careful management around paving, structures and drainage lines.

Ornamental species are widespread in Mosman's large residential gardens — Canary Island Date Palms, camphor laurels, London plane trees, various Ficus cultivars and mature exotic trees planted during the early twentieth century. These are often the trees that require the most attention as they age — structural pruning, crown reduction to manage weight load, or removal when they reach end of life in a confined garden setting. Camellia japonica hedges and large Pittosporum screens are also common, requiring regular maintenance to keep them tidy and within bounds. We work with whatever species are on your property — native or exotic — and give you an honest assessment of what each tree needs.

Mosman Council tree permits

Mosman Council requires development consent before removing or significantly pruning protected trees within the Mosman local government area. A tree is generally protected under the Mosman Development Control Plan if it has a trunk circumference of 30 cm or more measured at 1 metre above ground, or has a height of 4 metres or more. The council also maintains a register of significant trees that carry additional protections regardless of size. Permit applications are lodged through the NSW Planning Portal.

Mosman has a strong heritage tree culture and applications are assessed carefully. Removal is typically approved only where a tree poses a genuine safety risk, is dead or dying, or where there is a significant structural conflict. Crown reduction and management are often preferred outcomes. We can carry out an honest assessment of your tree, advise whether a permit is needed, identify whether the tree may be on the significant tree register, and assist you through the application process. Unauthorised removal carries substantial financial penalties — it's not worth the risk.

Common questions

Questions about tree work in Mosman

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Mosman?

Yes, in most cases. Mosman Council protects trees with a trunk circumference of 30 cm or more at 1 metre above ground, or a height of 4 metres or more. Mosman also maintains a significant tree register — some trees are protected regardless of size. We assess this at the quote stage and can advise on whether your tree is protected and what the permit process looks like. Don't remove a tree without checking first — penalties are significant.

Can you handle large Ficus or Moreton Bay Fig trees in Mosman?

Yes. We regularly work on large Ficus species in Mosman gardens and parks. These trees have extensive surface root systems and large crown spreads, and the work requires proper rigging and a careful approach to avoid damage to nearby structures, paving and irrigation. We assess the full root zone before starting and plan the work accordingly. If the tree is protected or heritage-listed, we'll identify that before any application goes to council.

How do you handle tight access on Mosman properties?

Most Mosman properties have at least one access challenge — steep driveways, narrow side passages, garden beds under trees, neighbouring structures close by. We carry out a proper site assessment at the quote stage and plan the rigging and equipment accordingly. If a job requires sectional dismantling and hand-lowering rather than whole-tree felling, that's what we do. We don't quote a job and then tell you on the day that access is a problem.

Do Angophora trees need to be assessed before pruning?

Yes. Angophora costata is a protected species under Mosman's DCP and requires council consent before removal or significant pruning. Beyond the permit question, these trees also benefit from careful assessment before any pruning work — they are prone to compartmentalising pruning wounds poorly if cuts are made incorrectly, which can lead to long-term decay. We prune Angophoras to the Australian Standard (AS 4373-2007), which specifies how and where cuts should be made to minimise this risk.
