North Sydney's trees live in a complex urban environment

We're based on the Northern Beaches at North Narrabeen and we travel to North Sydney regularly. It's a suburb — and an LGA — with a genuinely interesting tree challenge: you've got a dense commercial core flanked by established residential neighbourhoods, apartment buildings set among older houses, green spaces like Anderson Park, Holt Street Reserve and various pocket parks doing real work in an otherwise built-up environment. The trees here matter, and getting the work done properly requires understanding that mix.

In the residential pockets of North Sydney, the blocks are often compact and the trees have grown into tight spaces. Branches over roofs, roots lifting concrete, trees wedged between buildings on narrow side passages — these are everyday scenarios for us. We carry the rigging equipment and have the climbing skills to bring sections of a tree down carefully in confined spaces, without dropping material on structures or into neighbouring properties. If you've had an arborist come out and say the job is too hard or they can't access it, call us — tight access is where a properly equipped operator makes the difference.

North Sydney Council manages an extensive street tree program, and the protected street trees and park trees in the area are a significant part of what makes residential North Sydney liveable. If you're a property owner dealing with a street tree that is affecting your property — roots into your drains or lifting your footpath — the process for getting council to act can be slow. We can advise on where private rights end and council responsibility begins, and we're familiar with how North Sydney Council's tree assessment process works when private tree works applications are lodged.

We also work in North Sydney after storms. The suburb catches weather coming from both the north and south, and the mix of older and newer buildings with established trees means there's always storm damage to manage after a significant event. We offer emergency response to fallen trees, fractured limbs over structures and hazardous leaning trees. Call 0452 030 077 directly — it goes to Alex's phone, not an answering service.

Trees & vegetation in North Sydney

North Sydney's tree canopy reflects its urban density and the mix of older residential, apartment and commercial land uses. Street trees are a defining feature of the residential pockets — Lophostemon confertus (Brushbox), Ficus microcarpa var. hillii (Hill's Weeping Fig) and Jacaranda mimosifolia are among the most commonly encountered species on residential streets. These trees are managed by North Sydney Council under their street tree program, and they contribute significantly to the suburb's liveability. On older residential blocks, garden trees including camphor laurels, Liquid Ambers, various ornamental figs and Cocos Palms are widespread.

The sandstone outcrops and steeper sections of North Sydney — particularly around Holt Street Reserve and the gully systems — support some remnant native vegetation including Angophora costata and Eucalyptus species that have survived the suburb's development. These trees are typically the most protected under North Sydney Council's DCP and require proper assessment before any work is carried out. In gardens on the residential fringes, you'll also encounter Pittosporum undulatum (Sweet Pittosporum), Grevillea robusta (Silky Oak) and Callistemon species, along with a wide range of exotic ornamentals. We work with all of these and give you an honest picture of what the tree needs and what, if anything, the council process looks like.

North Sydney Council tree permits

North Sydney falls under North Sydney Council's local government area and its Development Control Plan (DCP). The DCP requires development consent before removing or significantly pruning any tree with a height of 5 metres or more, a canopy spread of 3 metres or more, or a trunk diameter of 15 cm or more measured at 1 metre above ground. These are relatively low thresholds — many suburban garden trees will meet at least one of them and will therefore require a permit before any significant pruning or removal work is done.

Heritage-listed trees and trees within heritage conservation areas carry additional protections under the DCP and may require a more detailed assessment and supporting arborist report as part of the application. We can assess your tree, determine whether it is protected, check whether it has any heritage listing and help you prepare the application. It's much simpler to sort this out upfront than to deal with the consequences of unauthorised removal, which can include significant fines and orders to replant.

Common questions

Questions about tree work in North Sydney

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in North Sydney?

Yes, in most cases. North Sydney Council's DCP requires consent for trees with a height of 5 metres or more, a canopy spread of 3 metres or more, or a trunk diameter of 15 cm or more at 1 metre above ground. These thresholds are lower than some other Sydney councils, so a large proportion of residential garden trees will be protected. We assess this at the quote stage — don't remove or prune significantly without checking first, as penalties can be substantial.

Who is responsible for a street tree damaging my property in North Sydney?

Street trees in North Sydney are managed by North Sydney Council. If a council-managed street tree is causing damage to your property — roots lifting your driveway or footpath, branches over your roof — the starting point is a formal request to council to inspect and act. This can be a slow process. We can advise on the distinction between council trees and private trees and help you understand your options. For private trees, whether yours or a neighbour's, the rules around responsibility are different — call us and we can walk you through it.

Can you remove a tree in a tight space next to an apartment building?

Yes. Removing a tree in a confined space next to a building is exactly the kind of work that requires proper rigging skills and the right equipment. We carry climbing gear, rigging pulleys and lowering devices that allow us to section a tree and lower each piece to the ground in a controlled way, without dropping anything onto the building or adjacent structures. We assess access and the drop zone at the quote stage so the plan is clear before we start.

How much does tree removal typically cost in North Sydney?

It genuinely varies — size of the tree, species, access, what needs to happen with the wood and green waste, whether a stump grind is required, whether rigging is needed. A small garden tree is a very different job to a large eucalyptus against a fence line. We give you an accurate price after seeing the job, not a ballpark over the phone.
