Northern Beaches arborist covering Neutral Bay and the North Sydney area. Qualified, insured and direct — you speak to Alex, the arborist who does the work, not a sales rep.
We're based at North Narrabeen on the Northern Beaches, and we cover Neutral Bay as part of our regular North Shore work. Neutral Bay has a different character to the outer suburbs — it's densely settled, a mix of apartment buildings and older houses, with relatively compact blocks and a street tree canopy that does a lot of heavy lifting for the suburb's liveability. Trees here are often working hard in constrained spaces, and the work they need reflects that.
Street trees in Neutral Bay are mostly managed by North Sydney Council, but private trees on residential and strata properties are the responsibility of the owner or strata body. Garden trees on compact inner-suburban blocks tend to grow into structures faster than on larger outer-suburb lots — roots lifting pavers, branches over rooftops, trees shading courtyards and neighbouring balconies. These are the issues we deal with most often in Neutral Bay. Crown reduction, clearance pruning above rooflines and structures, root management around paving — practical work that makes living with urban trees more manageable.
Some of Neutral Bay's older street and garden trees are heritage-listed — either individually or as part of a heritage streetscape. Heritage-listed trees require additional steps in the permit process with North Sydney Council, and any arborist working on them needs to understand what that means in practice. We're familiar with the North Sydney Council DCP requirements and can identify whether a tree has heritage listing before any application is made. Getting this wrong can mean substantial fines — it's worth checking first.
We also work with strata bodies and property managers in Neutral Bay. If you're managing a strata property with trees that need assessment, pruning or removal, we can provide written reports and arborist certificates where required for strata records. We understand that strata tree decisions often need proper documentation, and we make the process straightforward. Call or email — we're used to working with both individual homeowners and property managers.

Neutral Bay's tree canopy is a mix of street trees managed by North Sydney Council and private garden trees on residential and strata properties. The street tree palette leans heavily toward species suited to urban conditions — Lophostemon confertus (Brushbox) is common along many streets, valued for its tolerance of compacted soils and overhead wires. Ficus species, including Ficus microcarpa var. hillii (Hill's Weeping Fig) are used as street and avenue trees and can develop significant girth over decades. Jacaranda mimosifolia is a Neutral Bay garden favourite, as it is across much of the North Shore, and mature specimens overhang footpaths and fences across the suburb in spring.
In private gardens, particularly on older residential blocks, you'll find a wide range of species planted over the twentieth century — camphor laurels (Cinnamomum camphora), Liquidambar styraciflua, various Prunus species and ornamental figs. Some blocks also have remnant native trees — Angophora costata, Eucalyptus species and Pittosporum undulatum. Pittosporum undulatum (Sweet Pittosporum) in particular tends to grow quickly in the understorey of neglected gardens, becoming large enough to require a permit before any significant work can be done. We assess whatever species are on your property and give you a straight answer about what needs doing and what, if anything, requires a permit first.
Neutral Bay falls within the North Sydney Council local government area. North Sydney Council's Development Control Plan (DCP) requires development consent before removing or significantly pruning any tree that has a height of 5 metres or more, a canopy spread of 3 metres or more, or a trunk diameter of 15 cm or more measured at 1 metre above ground. These thresholds are lower than some other councils, which means a wider range of trees in Neutral Bay require permits than property owners often expect.
Heritage-listed trees and trees in heritage conservation areas carry additional protections and may require a more detailed assessment as part of the application. As your arborist, we can assess your tree, tell you whether a permit is needed, identify any heritage listing, and provide the supporting information required for the application. It's always worth checking before you start — council inspectors are active in the area and penalties for unauthorised removal are substantial.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Neutral Bay?
Yes, likely. Neutral Bay falls under North Sydney Council's DCP, which requires consent for trees with a height of 5 metres or more, a canopy spread of 3 metres or more, or a trunk diameter of 15 cm or more at 1 metre above ground. These thresholds are relatively low, so a wide range of garden trees will be protected. We check this at the quote stage — just call us and we'll assess the tree and let you know exactly where you stand before any application is needed.
Can you do tree work on a strata property in Neutral Bay?
Yes, we work on strata properties regularly. We can provide written arborist reports and certificates where required for strata records or owners corporation decisions. If the strata property requires a council permit, we can assist with the application process as well. For larger strata bodies, we're happy to liaise directly with the strata manager or building manager to keep the process straightforward.
What happens if a tree is affecting a neighbouring property?
This is common in Neutral Bay where blocks are smaller and trees grow quickly. If branches or roots are crossing a boundary, the neighbouring property owner generally has the right to prune back to the boundary line — but only to that line, and not in a way that causes lasting damage to the tree. If the tree is large or protected, council consent may still be required for the pruning work. We can assess the situation, advise on what's legally permissible, and carry out the work correctly and safely.
How do you deal with trees growing close to apartment buildings?
Carefully. Trees near apartment buildings in Neutral Bay often need clearance pruning above gutters and rooflines, root assessment near building footings, and sometimes removal of dead or structurally unsound trees in confined spaces. We carry out a proper assessment before we start and use rigging and sectional removal techniques to bring the tree down without dropping anything on the building. If access is tight, we plan the job accordingly — this is routine work for us.
We work across the North Shore regularly and know Neutral Bay well. Call us directly or send an enquiry — we'll come to you, look at the trees properly and give you a clear, honest price.
