Tree pruning

Proper pruning that benefits the tree — not just the view

Tree pruning is one of the most commonly misunderstood and poorly executed arboricultural services. Done correctly, it improves a tree's health, structure and longevity. Done badly, it can cause irreversible damage, lead to disease entry and ultimately shorten the life of a tree significantly. All pruning carried out by The Living Canopy is done in full accordance with AS 4373-2007 — the Australian standard for pruning of amenity trees.

We carry out a full range of pruning techniques, each applied where it will genuinely benefit the tree. Crown reduction reduces the overall size of the canopy while maintaining the tree's natural shape and structure. Crown thinning removes selected branches throughout the canopy to increase light penetration and airflow without changing the overall form. Deadwooding removes dead, diseased or dying branches that could fall and cause injury or property damage. Formative pruning shapes young trees to develop a strong, well-structured framework from the outset. Clearance pruning removes branches that are encroaching on buildings, powerlines or neighbouring properties. Selective branch removal targets specific structural issues — co-dominant stems, crossing branches, weak unions — before they become major problems.

Alex's background includes years working on National Trust estates in the UK, where correct pruning technique was non-negotiable and every cut was made with the long-term health of the tree in mind. That same standard applies to every pruning job we carry out on Sydney's Northern Beaches. Poor pruning — topping, lion-tailing, flush cuts — is not something we do, even if asked. If pruning isn't the right answer, we'll tell you honestly.

All pruning debris is removed from site at the end of every job. We work cleanly, carefully and with respect for your property and your trees.

Tree pruning across the Northern Beaches

We carry out tree pruning across the full Northern Beaches — from North Narrabeen and Narrabeen, south to Dee Why, Manly and Balgowlah, and north to Newport and Avalon. In North Narrabeen we regularly work on the large Angophoras and Melaleucas around the lagoon — species that respond well to careful crown management but need the right technique. In Elanora Heights, mature specimens on large blocks often need deadwooding and structural assessment before any canopy work begins. On Avalon's prestige properties and Newport's Pittwater waterfront, we manage large, established garden trees — old Moreton Bay Figs, sprawling Red Gums — where precision matters and the margin for error is nil.

Pruning is often the better answer when removal seems like the obvious solution. A well-executed crown reduction on a tree that's overgrown its space, or targeted deadwooding on a tree that looks concerning, can resolve a problem permanently without losing a tree that has taken decades to establish. We'll always give you an honest assessment of what the tree actually needs — not what generates the most work.

What to expect

Alex will visit your property, assess the tree and discuss what pruning approach will genuinely benefit it — giving you a clear, honest price with no obligation. All work is carried out to AS 4373-2007 standard, with all debris removed and the site left clean. You deal directly with Alex on every job from start to finish.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between crown reduction and topping?

Crown reduction reduces the overall size of the canopy by making cuts back to suitable lateral branches, maintaining the tree's natural form and leaving clean wounds that heal properly. Topping indiscriminately cuts across the main stem and large branches — it causes massive wounds, stimulates excessive regrowth and eventually kills the tree. We do not top trees. If a tree is too large for its space, we'll assess whether crown reduction is appropriate or whether removal is the honest recommendation.

Do I need a council permit for tree pruning?

For significant pruning work — particularly crown reduction over a certain percentage or works on large trees — Northern Beaches Council may require consent under DCP Part B13. The same size thresholds that apply to removal (5m height, 5m canopy spread or 30cm trunk diameter) generally apply. We advise on permit requirements as part of every quote. See our Northern Beaches tree permit guide for full detail.

How often should trees be pruned?

It depends on the species, age and what you're trying to achieve. Formative pruning on young trees might be every couple of years. Established trees typically need attention every 3–7 years depending on growth rate and what's happening around them — branches growing toward buildings, dead wood accumulating, or canopy density building up. We'll give you an honest assessment at the quote stage.

Can pruning fix a tree that has been badly topped in the past?

Sometimes, yes. Remedial crown restoration pruning can improve the structure of a topped tree over time — removing the weakly attached regrowth and selecting better-positioned shoots to form a new canopy framework. It takes a few seasons to see results. We'll give you a realistic picture at the site visit of what's achievable and how long it might take.
