Complete stump removal — below ground and out of sight
Once a tree has been removed, the stump left behind is more than just an eyesore. It's a tripping hazard in your garden or lawn, a potential obstacle for mowing, and without treatment it can re-shoot, sending up new growth from the base that needs to be managed repeatedly. Old stumps can also harbour root rot and fungal disease that spreads to nearby healthy trees, shrubs and garden beds — and some species will continue to grow slowly underground, with roots eventually lifting paving, driveways or even structural foundations.
Stump grinding is the most effective and efficient way to deal with a leftover stump. Using professional grinding equipment, we grind the stump down below ground level — typically 150–200mm below the surface, though we can go deeper if the site requires it for paving or construction. The result is a clean, level area of mulch and soil that can be raked over, topped up with fresh soil and left to break down naturally, or cleared entirely if you prefer.
The wood chip mulch produced by grinding is high in carbon and breaks down well as a garden mulch — we can leave it on site for you to use, or remove it as part of the clean-up. All stump sizes are handled, from small garden stumps to large, ancient root systems from mature eucalypts and fig trees. Once the stump is ground out, the resulting void can be filled with topsoil and turfed over, planted with new garden beds, laid with paving or used as the footprint for a new structure or outdoor area. We leave the site clean and ready for whatever you have planned next.

Ground conditions across the peninsula
The Northern Beaches throws up three quite different digging conditions, sometimes within the same street.
Along the coastal strip from Collaroy up through Newport and Avalon, the ground is largely sand. Sand grinds quickly but collapses inward as the void opens up, so the finished hole usually needs more backfill than people expect. If you're turfing over afterwards, budget for a couple of barrows of clean topsoil.
Back from the water, and up on the plateaus and ridgelines, you hit sandstone. A stump sitting on shelf rock can only be ground to the depth of that rock, and no machine changes that. We'll tell you at quote stage if it looks likely, rather than discovering it halfway through the job.
Through the Ingleside and Terrey Hills side of the peninsula the soils turn heavier and clay-rich, holding water and grinding slower, particularly after rain.
Species matter too. Cocos palms are everywhere here and behave nothing like hardwood: no growth rings, no grain, wet and fibrous, and the material left behind is soggy rather than chippy and is usually better carted away than spread. Norfolk Island pines and she-oaks along the beachfront tend to have wider, shallower root plates than the same species would inland, because of the sand and the salt exposure.
Getting the machine to your stump
Our grinder is 74cm across its tracks. A standard domestic side gate is 90cm to a metre, so on most properties it walks straight through to the back garden without lifting a fence panel or taking a gate off its hinges.
That matters more here than it might elsewhere. A lot of the older blocks through Avalon, Newport and the Collaroy beachfront have narrow side passages hemmed in by the house on one side and a fence on the other, and a full-size machine simply cannot get in. If a previous quote told you the stump was unreachable, it's worth asking again.
What we need:
- A clear run from the street or driveway to the stump
- Side access measured at its narrowest point, including any latch, downpipe or meter box that sticks out into the gap
- Reasonable ground — saturated lawn can be worked but will mark up, and we'll tell you that before we start rather than after
- Steps, slopes and retaining walls are all workable, they just get factored into the quote
