Complete stump removal below ground level across Sydney's Northern Beaches — leaving a clean, level site ready for turf, landscaping or new planting.
Once a tree has been removed, the stump left behind is more than just an eyesore. It's a tripping hazard in your garden or lawn, a potential obstacle for mowing, and without treatment it can re-shoot, sending up new growth from the base that needs to be managed repeatedly. Old stumps can also harbour root rot and fungal disease that spreads to nearby healthy trees, shrubs and garden beds — and some species will continue to grow slowly underground, with roots eventually lifting paving, driveways or even structural foundations.
Stump grinding is the most effective and efficient way to deal with a leftover stump. Using professional grinding equipment, we grind the stump down below ground level — typically 150–200mm below the surface, though we can go deeper if the site requires it for paving or construction. The result is a clean, level area of mulch and soil that can be raked over, topped up with fresh soil and left to break down naturally, or cleared entirely if you prefer.
The wood chip mulch produced by grinding is high in carbon and breaks down well as a garden mulch — we can leave it on site for you to use, or remove it as part of the clean-up. All stump sizes are handled, from small garden stumps to large, ancient root systems from mature eucalypts and fig trees. If you're having a tree removed, stump grinding can often be combined into the same job at a reduced cost — just let us know when you enquire.
Once the stump is ground out, the resulting void can be filled with topsoil and turfed over, planted with new garden beds, laid with paving or used as the footprint for a new structure or outdoor area. We leave the site clean and ready for whatever you have planned next.
Alex will assess the stump, confirm the required depth and give you a clear price. Grinding is carried out with professional equipment, the site is left clean and tidy, and the resulting mulch can be left or removed based on your preference. Stump grinding can be added to any tree removal job or booked separately for existing stumps.

How deep does stump grinding go?
Our stump grinder typically grinds 200–300mm below ground level — deep enough to allow replanting, lay turf, or build over the area. If you need deeper grinding for construction, let us know and we'll advise. For typical stump grinding prices, see our Northern Beaches cost guide.
What happens to the mulch and debris after grinding?
The grinder produces a mix of wood chips and soil that fills the void. We can leave this on-site for the ground to settle and top with soil, or remove it entirely — just let us know your preference at the quoting stage.
Can you grind stumps in tight-access gardens?
Yes — we have equipment suited to tight-access gardens including narrow gates and sloped blocks. Send us photos when you enquire and we can confirm the right equipment and approach.
Is stump grinding safe near fences and paving?
Yes, with care. We set up protective boards or matting where necessary to catch debris. For stumps very close to structures or utilities, we'll advise the safest approach at the site visit.
We'll come to your property, assess the stump and give you a clear, honest price.
