Expert arboricultural services for Avalon's large established gardens, prestige waterfront properties and complex sloping terrain.
Avalon is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and characterful suburbs on the Northern Beaches. Sitting at the northern end of the peninsula with Pittwater to the west and the Pacific to the east, Avalon Parade, Old Barrenjoey Road and the winding village streets are lined with some of the most impressive established trees anywhere in Sydney. This is a suburb where the landscape — and the trees within it — define the character of the place. We treat every job here with the care and skill that the setting deserves.
Avalon's gardens are known for their maturity and diversity. Large Angophora costata (Sydney Red Gum) specimens dominate the ridgelines and bigger blocks, their spreading canopies sometimes spanning 15 metres or more. Old Moreton Bay Figs (Ficus macrophylla) appear in Avalon's parks and in a number of established gardens — magnificent trees that require careful assessment when they begin impacting structures or paving. Tropical-style gardens are also common here, with Bangalow Palms (Archontophoenix cunninghamiana) and Cocos Palms (Syagrus romanzoffiana) forming a lush canopy on many properties. Cocos Palm seed pods in particular can create significant maintenance obligations and we carry out regular maintenance to keep them under control.
The prestige waterfront properties on Pittwater require a particularly high standard of work. Access is often restricted, views are sensitive, and the expectations of property owners are understandably high. We have the skills, equipment and attention to detail that this kind of work demands. We are also experienced in working on the steep and sloping blocks that are common throughout Avalon — from gentle garden slopes to near-vertical sandstone faces where rope access and technical rigging are required.
Avalon's proximity to Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park to the north means that properties near the park boundary must be managed with particular care. Trees overhanging from or into the park boundary require understanding of permit obligations on both sides, and any work near bushland interfaces needs to be carried out with ecological sensitivity.

Avalon's tree canopy reflects the suburb's fortunate combination of large blocks, relatively fertile soils in the valley bottoms and a long history of sympathetic gardening. Angophora costata (Sydney Red Gum) is the dominant native canopy species, its smooth orange-pink bark instantly recognisable as you move through the suburb's ridgeline streets. On the larger blocks and in the more sheltered gullies, old Moreton Bay Figs (Ficus macrophylla) have grown to extraordinary size — their broad, buttressed trunks and expansive canopies making them landmarks in their own right. Both species require careful management when they begin interacting with structures, paths and neighbouring properties.
Avalon's gardens also feature a wide range of introduced and tropical species. Bangalow Palms (Archontophoenix cunninghamiana) are extremely popular, providing a lush, rainforest aesthetic. Cocos Palms (Syagrus romanzoffiana), while visually appealing, are considered an environmental weed and can seed prolifically — regular maintenance is important to limit their spread. Canary Island Date Palms (Phoenix canariensis) appear on a number of prestige properties and require specialist pruning. Along Pittwater, the humidity and sheltered aspect supports Lilly Pilly hedges and other subtropical species in many established gardens.
Northern Beaches Council's Development Control Plan (DCP Part B13 — Tree and Vegetation Management) applies throughout Avalon. Any tree that is 5 metres or more in height, has a canopy spread of 5 metres or more, or a trunk diameter of 30 cm or more at 1 metre above ground requires Council consent before removal or significant pruning. Applications are lodged via the Council's online portal, and the process typically requires a detailed assessment of the tree's condition, value and any impacts on neighbouring properties.
Given the significant size of many trees in Avalon's established gardens, a large proportion of trees on residential blocks will require a permit before any major work proceeds. Engaging a qualified arborist early in the process — before you have committed to a course of action — makes the permit process considerably smoother. We can assess your trees, advise on what is and isn't permitted, and support your application with the relevant technical information.

Do I need a council permit to remove a tree in Avalon?
Yes, in most cases. Northern Beaches Council requires development consent before removing or significantly pruning any tree that is 5 metres or more in height, has a canopy spread of 5 metres or more, or a trunk diameter of 30 cm or more at 1 metre above ground. Given the size of the established trees in most Avalon gardens — Angophoras, Moreton Bay Figs, large exotic trees — you should assume a permit is required and check before starting work. The penalties for unauthorised removal are significant. We advise on permit requirements as part of every quote.
I have a large Moreton Bay Fig near my house — what are my options?
Moreton Bay Figs (Ficus macrophylla) are protected trees, and removal typically requires strong grounds and council approval. But removal is rarely the only option. Crown reduction can reduce the spread and load of overhanging limbs. Root barrier installation can address foundation concerns. Targeted structural pruning can remove specific limbs that are posing a risk without touching the rest of the tree. Alex will give you an honest assessment of what the tree actually needs and what the permit situation looks like — not just a quote for the most expensive option.
Do you work on Pittwater waterfront properties in Avalon?
Yes. Waterfront work on the Pittwater side of Avalon is part of what we do regularly — trees overhanging jetties, boat sheds, neighbouring docks and foreshore structures. Access is often restricted, the stakes are high and the work requires the right rigging setup and equipment. We have the technical skills and the experience to carry this out correctly.
How do permits work for trees near the Ku-ring-gai National Park boundary?
Trees on private land near the park boundary still fall under Northern Beaches Council's jurisdiction, so the standard permit process applies. However, work close to or overhanging the park boundary requires additional care — any debris, equipment or chemicals must not enter the park, and work that could affect habitat trees used by wildlife needs careful management. We're familiar with the sensitivities around the park boundary and how to work near it appropriately.
Call us directly or send an enquiry. We'll visit your property, assess the trees properly and give you a clear, honest price — no obligation.
