Serving Bilgola and the surrounding Northern Beaches — qualified, insured arborist work on steep coastal blocks and established gardens.
Bilgola is one of Sydney's smallest and most exclusive beachside suburbs, tucked into a steep valley on the Northern Beaches between Avalon and Newport. The terrain drops sharply from the surrounding plateau down to the beach and lagoon, which means properties here are often built on significant slopes with mature gardens that have been developing for decades. Tree work in Bilgola requires a different approach to a flat suburban block — and it's an environment The Living Canopy knows well. When you call, you speak directly to Alex Price, the qualified arborist who will assess and carry out the work himself.
The combination of ocean aspect, steep terrain and old established gardens means trees in Bilgola can be large, varied and in some cases growing in positions that make access genuinely difficult. Properties on the valley sides may have trees growing below house level, above house level or right alongside structures in constrained spaces. Standard felling is rarely the right approach here — sectional dismantling with rigging, using the slope to advantage, is much more typical. We carry out this kind of work regularly and won't pass the difficulty cost on to you in the form of an inflated quote. We assess each job on its merits and price it accordingly.
The saltwater environment at Bilgola — both ocean spray and the lagoon — has shaped the gardens over time. Trees growing on exposed ocean-facing positions are often wind-trained and asymmetric, with dense wood on the windward side and less mass to leeward. This affects how we assess structural risk: a tree that appears to be leaning may actually have established in that direction due to prevailing winds and be perfectly stable, or it may have become wind-weakened over time. You need an experienced eye to tell the difference, and we provide that as part of every site visit.
Storm damage is a reality in Bilgola. The suburb is exposed to southerly busters and east coast lows in a way that more sheltered Northern Beaches suburbs are not. After storm events, we prioritise response to genuinely hazardous situations — trees on roofs, blocked access routes, fractured limbs over occupied areas. Bilgola's steep terrain and coastal position produce a plant community that has to cope with salt exposure, shallow soils and significant variation in aspect across a very small area. On the drier, exposed upper slopes and valley edges, Angophora costata (Sydney Red Gum) and Banksia serrata (Old Man Banksia) are among the hardiest native canopy species, their thick bark and waxy leaves adapted to the exposed conditions. Leptospermum laevigatum (Coast Tea-tree) is common on the ocean-facing slopes, growing in characteristic dense thickets that provide wind shelter for less hardy plants behind them. On the more sheltered lagoon side, Melaleuca quinquenervia (Broad-leaved Paperbark) occurs along the water's edge, its layered papery bark well adapted to seasonally wet conditions.
The established gardens at Bilgola tell a story of deliberate planting over many decades. Larger properties often have mature specimen trees — Jacarandas, Poincianas, large-leafed Figs and other subtropical ornamentals that were fashionable in mid-20th century garden design — alongside long-established native plantings. Some of these specimen trees are approaching the end of their structural life, and ageing ornamentals in steep terrain can present real risk if they fail. We assess older garden trees as carefully as natives, paying attention to root zone health, trunk integrity and the specific target zones below the canopy. Many old trees can be managed safely with targeted pruning; some cannot, and we'll tell you plainly which is which.
Northern Beaches Council requires development consent under their Development Control Plan (DCP Part B13 — Tree and Vegetation Management) before removing or significantly pruning any tree that meets one or more of the following thresholds: 5 metres or more in height, a canopy spread of 5 metres or more, or a trunk diameter of 30 cm or more measured at 1 metre above ground level. Applications are submitted through Council's online portal.
In Bilgola, the combination of native vegetation, environmentally sensitive coastal and lagoon land, and the small size of the suburb means that permit applications are scrutinised carefully by Council. Most mature native trees will require consent, and the ecological character of the lagoon foreshore and valley vegetation adds sensitivity to applications in those areas. We advise on permit requirements as part of every site visit and can prepare arborist reports to support applications where needed.

How do you work on very steep blocks at Bilgola?
Steep terrain is something we deal with regularly across the Northern Beaches, and Bilgola is one of the more challenging environments. We use rigging systems to lower sections of timber piece by piece, and on very steep sites we can set up lines from anchor trees above or below to control the descent of cut material. Where road access allows, a small crane is sometimes the most efficient solution. We walk every site before quoting and explain exactly how we plan to manage the specific challenges.
My old garden tree is looking unhealthy — should I have it removed?
Not necessarily — but you should have it properly assessed. Signs of decline like dead branches, fungal brackets at the base, discoloured foliage or bark damage can indicate structural problems, but they can also be manageable with appropriate care. We assess older garden trees carefully, looking at root zone condition, trunk integrity and whether the canopy is worth preserving. If the tree is genuinely at risk of failure and cannot be made safe, we'll say so. If targeted pruning can extend its life safely, we'll recommend that instead.
Are trees near the Bilgola Lagoon subject to additional restrictions?
Yes, potentially. Northern Beaches Council can apply additional environmental conditions to permit applications for trees near sensitive lagoon or coastal foreshore areas. This is because the ecological values of these zones — including water quality, native vegetation corridors and wildlife habitat — are considered in the assessment process. We factor this into any permit application we assist with and advise you on the most likely pathway to approval.
Is the site visit free?
Yes. We come to the property, walk the site and provide a written quote at no charge. Bilgola can involve more complex logistics than a typical flat suburban block, so we always prefer to see the job in person before committing to a price — it's better for both of us than a ballpark over the phone.
