Northern Beaches arborist covering Cremorne and the North Sydney area. Qualified, fully insured, and the kind of arborist who turns up as quoted and does the job properly.
We're based at North Narrabeen on the Northern Beaches and work in Cremorne regularly as part of our North Shore rounds. Cremorne has a lot in common with Mosman — elevated peninsula position, views over Middle Harbour, prestige residential properties with large established gardens that have been planted and cared for over generations. It's the kind of suburb where the trees are part of the reason people buy, and where the work needs to be done carefully by someone who knows what they're looking at.
The Cremorne Peninsula overlooks Middle Harbour, and the interaction between the sandstone escarpment, the harbour foreshore and the mature gardens creates an interesting tree environment. Angophora costata (Sydney Red Gum) is the dominant native canopy species on the ridge and gully edges — these trees are protected under North Sydney Council's DCP and require careful assessment before any pruning or removal work is considered. We see everything from routine deadwooding on healthy trees to structural failures where a major stem has split, and we carry out hazard assessments that give property owners a clear picture of the tree's condition and what, if anything, needs to be done.
Cremorne's prestige residential properties often have large ornamental gardens with a wide range of species — Ficus macrophylla (Moreton Bay Fig) in some of the larger gardens, mature Agapanthus hedges, formal Camellia and Pittosporum screens, and a variety of exotic trees planted over the twentieth century. These gardens require skilled, thoughtful pruning rather than aggressive cutting. We prune to the Australian Standard (AS 4373-2007) and can discuss the right approach for each species on your property before we start work.
Access is worth mentioning in Cremorne. Some of the streets on the steeper slopes have challenging approaches — narrow roads, tight driveways, steep terrain — and tree work in these locations requires proper planning and the right equipment. We assess access at the quote stage and plan accordingly. If a job requires a crane, we have access to crane operators we trust. If it requires rigging and hand-lowering sections piece by piece, that's what we do. The right approach for the site, not the easiest one for us.

Cremorne's vegetation reflects its harbour peninsula position, sandstone geology and long history of prestige residential development. The dominant native species is Angophora costata (Sydney Red Gum), which appears throughout the suburb on the sandstone ridge lines and escarpment edges. These trees are characteristic of the Sydney sandstone landscape and feature the smooth, pale-orange to reddish bark and gnarled branching structure that makes them visually distinctive. Larger specimens can have crowns extending well beyond the garden boundary, and the deadwood they naturally produce makes regular assessment important on properties with structures underneath. Eucalyptus saligna (Sydney Blue Gum) and smaller Eucalyptus species also appear, particularly in the more sheltered gully positions.
Cremorne's established gardens contain a broad range of ornamental species accumulated over a century of prestige residential planting. Ficus macrophylla (Moreton Bay Fig) appears as a garden specimen in some of the larger properties, with the deep, buttressed roots characteristic of a long-established tree. Camellia japonica and Camellia sasanqua — in both hedge and specimen forms — are widely planted. Photinia and Pittosporum screens are common boundary treatments, growing to considerable size and requiring periodic reduction to keep them within bounds. Canary Island Date Palms feature in some gardens. We work with all of these species and give you an honest assessment of what each tree needs and when.
Cremorne falls within the North Sydney Council local government area. North Sydney Council's Development Control Plan requires development consent before removing or significantly pruning any tree that has a height of 5 metres or more, a canopy spread of 3 metres or more, or a trunk diameter of 15 cm or more measured at 1 metre above ground. These thresholds apply across the North Sydney LGA and are enforced actively. Cremorne also has heritage conservation areas that may impose additional requirements on tree works within those zones.
Before carrying out any significant tree work in Cremorne, it's important to check whether the tree meets these thresholds and whether the property falls within a heritage conservation area. We can assess this at the quote stage — and if a permit is needed, we can advise on what information the application will need. We can also provide an arborist assessment report where council requires one. The simplest thing to do is call us before you do anything to a significant tree. It costs you nothing and saves the risk of a substantial fine.

Do I need a permit to remove or prune a tree in Cremorne?
In most cases, yes. North Sydney Council's DCP requires consent for trees with a height of 5 metres or more, a canopy spread of 3 metres or more, or a trunk diameter of 15 cm or more at 1 metre above ground. Most established garden trees in Cremorne will meet at least one of these criteria. If your property is in a heritage conservation area, additional requirements may apply. We check this at the quote stage — call us first before you start planning any significant tree work.
Our Angophora is dropping large limbs — do we need to remove it?
Not necessarily. Angophora costata naturally produces deadwood and does occasionally drop limbs — that's a feature of the species rather than automatically a sign that the tree is failing. A proper hazard assessment will identify whether the deadwood or limb drop risk is within normal limits for the species, or whether there's a structural issue that needs addressing. In most cases, targeted deadwooding and crown management resolves the issue without removing the tree. We carry out these assessments regularly and will give you an honest picture of what the tree actually needs.
Can you prune trees overhanging Middle Harbour from steep sites in Cremorne?
Yes. We're experienced working on steep and difficult access sites. For trees on escarpment edges or steep harbour-facing slopes, the work often requires technical rigging to control where sections land and prevent them from rolling down the slope or into the water. We plan this carefully at the quote stage and carry the equipment to do it properly. Working on a slope without proper rigging is dangerous and unprofessional — we don't cut corners on this.
How do you handle view pruning for harbour views in Cremorne?
View pruning is a legitimate service, but it needs to be done carefully and within the constraints of whatever council permit applies to the tree. We assess what pruning is structurally sound and what will actually open the view you're after, then advise on whether that work is achievable within the permit framework. We don't make promises about view outcomes that would require removing protected trees or making cuts that would damage the tree's structure. If there's a sensible path to improving the view while keeping the tree, we'll find it.
We work across Cremorne and the North Shore regularly. Call us directly or send an enquiry — we'll come out, assess the trees and give you a straight, honest price.
