Qualified arborist covering Tamarama. Compact suburb, coastal exposure, restricted access — we know how to work here safely.
Tamarama is one of Sydney's smallest and most tightly packed beachside suburbs, sandwiched between the cliffs above Tamarama Beach and the residential grid running back to Bondi. It's a suburb where tree work demands care — properties are closely spaced, access can be restricted, and coastal exposure has a real effect on tree condition that isn't always obvious from the footpath. We travel to Tamarama from our Northern Beaches base and carry out tree removal, pruning, hedge trimming and stump grinding across the suburb.
The cliff-top and cliff-edge properties in Tamarama sit above dramatic sandstone faces with the ocean below, and tree work in these positions requires real care. Trees on or near the cliff edge may be structurally compromised by salt spray, wind exposure and coastal erosion, and work here requires careful rigging to ensure nothing falls where it shouldn't. We assess these positions carefully at the quoting stage. If crane access is needed, we have access to reliable crane operators — for properties where there's no alternative way to manage a large tree removal safely, this is the right call.
Waverley Council covers Tamarama and requires development consent for significant tree work. We check permit requirements at every site visit and advise on the application if one is needed. You speak directly to Alex Price — no call centre, no crew you haven't met.

Tamarama's compact geography means the tree population here is concentrated on relatively small residential blocks and the cliff-edge margins above the beach. The cliff-facing remnant vegetation features coastal heath species — Banksia, Casuarina and low-growing native shrubs adapted to salt spray and exposed sandstone — along with some Angophora costata (Sydney Red Gum) in the more sheltered gully positions. These cliff-edge trees are often visually dramatic but can be structurally compromised by their exposed position — salt burn, wind pruning and shallow, rocky root systems all contribute to a different risk profile than you'd see in an inland garden.
The residential streets of Tamarama running back from the cliff edge have a typical Eastern Suburbs mix — Cocos Palms are widespread, along with Ficus species as street trees and garden specimens, and various ornamental hedges. Photinia, Lilly Pilly and Pittosporum are common boundary treatments and can grow quickly in the coastal climate. If you're unsure whether your trees are protected under the Waverley Council DCP, an on-site assessment will clarify the position before any work begins.
Tamarama falls within the Waverley Council local government area. Waverley Council requires development consent before removing or significantly pruning trees that meet their size thresholds — generally 5 metres or more in height or a trunk diameter of 30 cm or more at 1 metre above ground. Applications are made through Waverley Council's online portal. Not all trees are covered — some introduced species and trees in specific circumstances are exempt — but the default assumption for established trees in Tamarama should be that consent is required.
We check permit requirements at every site visit in Tamarama. If a permit is needed, we advise on the process and can prepare an arborist report where council requires one. Call us before making decisions about significant tree work — understanding the permit position first is always the right starting point.

Do I need a Waverley Council permit for tree work in Tamarama?
For most established trees, yes. Waverley Council requires development consent before removing or significantly pruning trees that are 5 metres or more in height or have a trunk diameter of 30 cm or more at 1 metre above ground. Most significant residential trees in Tamarama will meet at least one threshold. We check this at the quoting stage — call before planning any significant tree work.
Can you safely work on trees near Tamarama's cliff edges?
Yes, but it requires careful planning. Trees in cliff-edge positions need to be assessed for structural condition first — coastal exposure often causes internal decay that isn't visible from the outside. The removal or pruning work then needs to be rigged to prevent any material falling onto the cliff face, beach or ocean below. We plan these jobs carefully and have the rigging equipment to do them safely. It's not a job for anyone who hasn't worked on cliff-edge sites before.
My tree is only small — do I still need a permit?
If it doesn't meet Waverley Council's size thresholds, you may not. But small can be relative — a tree that looks compact from the ground may have a trunk diameter that triggers the permit requirement. If you're not sure, the simplest thing is to call us. We can give you a quick steer at the quoting stage, and it's much easier to check before work begins than to deal with an enforcement action from council afterwards.
How do you access properties in Tamarama with limited street access?
Access is part of every quote assessment. In Tamarama, where blocks are small and streets can be narrow, we look at vehicle access, working space and how material will be removed from site. For jobs where standard chipping and removal isn't practical, we plan alternative approaches — including working in sections, carrying material by hand if needed, or crane access for the right jobs. The quote will reflect the actual access constraints at your property.
