Tree management on Terrey Hills' larger properties

Terrey Hills is one of the Northern Beaches' most rural residential areas, sitting along Terrey Hills Road, Booralie Road, Manor Road and Church Street. Properties here range from generous residential blocks to multi-hectare rural holdings — horse properties, hobby farms and lifestyle acreage where the scale of tree management is very different from a suburban back yard. The trees are bigger, the access is more involved, and the risks of getting it wrong are greater.

Bushfire risk is a constant reality in Terrey Hills. The suburb is surrounded by native bushland and many properties sit in BAL-29 or higher bushfire attack level categories. Asset Protection Zone (APZ) maintenance is a regular requirement — typically involving systematic thinning and management of woody vegetation within defined distances of buildings, following the Rural Fire Service's Planning for Bush Fire Protection guidelines. We work with landowners in Terrey Hills to develop practical, sustainable APZ programs that meet RFS standards while preserving the bush character that makes the area what it is.

Working on rural properties requires specific experience. Horse paddocks, dams, fencing, rural infrastructure and rough terrain all create complexities that don't arise in suburban settings. We assess each job carefully — considering machinery access, drop zones, ground conditions and the specific nature of each tree — and we bring the right equipment rather than compromising on safety.

Some properties in Terrey Hills are also adjacent to the Duffys Forest Ecological Community at the eastern edges of the suburb. This adds an additional layer of environmental consideration that not all arborists are aware of — we understand what this means for any proposed vegetation work.

Trees & vegetation in Terrey Hills

Terrey Hills supports some of the most impressive eucalypt woodland on the Northern Beaches. Corymbia maculata (Spotted Gum) is a prominent species on the deeper, richer soils — its smooth, mottled trunk is visually striking and it can reach 30 metres or more at maturity. Eucalyptus microcorys (Tallowwood) is also common on better-drained slopes, and E. paniculata (Grey Ironbark) appears on the upper ridges. E. haemastoma (Scribbly Gum) marks the sandstone outcrops and shallower soils throughout. Banksia ericifolia (Heath-leaved Banksia) and Banksia serrata (Old Man Banksia) form a dense mid-storey scrub on many properties.

On rural properties with cleared paddocks and dams, the vegetation picture changes — pasture grasses and introduced species are common, but remnant native trees are often found along fencelines, drainage lines and road verges. These remnant trees are ecologically valuable and often provide shade for stock, and we recommend assessment before any clearance work to identify and retain significant specimens.

Northern Beaches Council tree permits — Terrey Hills

Northern Beaches Council's DCP Part B13 applies in Terrey Hills. Any tree that is 5 metres or more in height, has a canopy spread of 5 metres or more, or has a trunk diameter of 30cm or more at 1m above ground requires approval before it can be removed or significantly pruned. Applications are submitted online through Council's development application portal.

Rural Fire Service APZ requirements may allow some vegetation removal within the APZ without a separate NBC permit — however, this depends on the specific zoning, vegetation category and location of the property, and should be confirmed before any work commences. We can advise on how NBC and RFS requirements interact for your specific property in Terrey Hills.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions — Terrey Hills

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Terrey Hills?

Most trees in Terrey Hills fall under Northern Beaches Council DCP Part B13. Any tree 5 metres or taller, with a trunk diameter over 30 cm at 1 metre height, or a canopy spread of 5 metres or more requires development consent before removal or significant pruning. Exempt species and trees within 3 metres of an approved structure may not need a permit. We check permit requirements at every quote. See our Northern Beaches tree permit guide for more detail.

How much does tree removal cost in Terrey Hills?

Tree removal in Terrey Hills typically ranges from $400 for a small tree to $3,500+ for large complex jobs. Price depends on tree size, species, site access and proximity to structures or power lines. All quotes are free — we visit your property, assess the job and give you a written price with no obligation. See our 2026 cost guide for typical price ranges.

How quickly can you get to Terrey Hills for urgent work?

For genuine emergencies — storm damage, fallen trees, or trees posing an immediate risk to life or property — we respond the same day.
