Curl Curl tree work — coastal conditions need local knowledge

Curl Curl sits between Freshwater to the south and Dee Why to the north, with its ocean-facing beach and the freshwater wetlands of Curl Curl Lagoon making it one of the more ecologically interesting suburbs on the Northern Beaches. When you call The Living Canopy, you're speaking directly to Alex Price — a qualified arborist who works this peninsula every week and understands the specific challenges that coastal soil profiles and salt-laden onshore winds create for trees here.

Properties in Curl Curl cover a wide range of conditions. The blocks closest to the beach sit on sandy, free-draining soils where trees face salt spray and wind exposure that gradually weakens branch structure over time. Further back from the ocean, soils transition and the tree palette changes accordingly. On the western side of the suburb near Curl Curl Lagoon, you encounter the wet-margin species — Melaleuca quinquenervia (Broad-leaved Paperbark) dominates the lagoon edge and frequently self-seeds onto residential blocks. These trees need proper assessment before any work is undertaken, and most will require a permit from Northern Beaches Council.

The sandstone ridges and better-drained areas of Curl Curl support a different community: Angophora costata (Sydney Red Gum) with its smooth, burnt-orange bark is the most distinctive canopy tree, and Banksia integrifolia (Coast Banksia) is well adapted to the sandy coastal soils here, tolerating salt exposure better than many species. These are trees worth keeping — they provide habitat, they're visually significant and they add real value to properties. Our approach is always to work with the tree first and recommend removal only when it's genuinely necessary.

Coastal exposure also means Curl Curl properties can take a hit during east coast lows and summer storm events. Branches compromised by salt spray or previous wind damage are often the first to fail. We carry out hazard assessments to identify these risks before a storm event — and we respond same-day when storm damage does occur. Call 0452 030 077 directly; it goes straight to Alex, not a booking agent.

Trees & vegetation in Curl Curl

Curl Curl's coastal position gives it a distinctive tree character. Banksia integrifolia (Coast Banksia) is well-suited to the sandy soils and salt exposure close to the beach — its leathery leaves and tolerance for wind and spray make it one of the few natives that thrives right on the coastal fringe. Further back from the ocean, Angophora costata (Sydney Red Gum) becomes the dominant canopy species on better-drained sandstone soils, its smooth pale trunk and twisted branches a familiar feature of established Northern Beaches streets. Eucalypts including Eucalyptus haemastoma (Scribbly Gum) also occur on the sandstone ridges.

Around Curl Curl Lagoon and its margins, the vegetation shifts to wetland species. Melaleuca quinquenervia (Broad-leaved Paperbark) is the characteristic tree of these wetter environments, tolerating periodic inundation and forming multi-stemmed thickets in some areas. It self-seeds freely and can establish on residential blocks adjacent to the lagoon. On residential streets throughout Curl Curl you'll also encounter a range of garden exotics — Cocos Palms, Jacarandas, ornamental figs and the occasional established Liquidambar — alongside garden Camellias and hedge species that have been planted over many decades of suburban development.

Northern Beaches Council tree permits

Northern Beaches Council requires development consent under their Development Control Plan (DCP Part B13 — Tree and Vegetation Management) before removing or significantly pruning any tree that meets one or more of the following thresholds: 5 metres or more in height, a canopy spread of 5 metres or more, or a trunk diameter of 30 cm or more measured at 1 metre above ground level. Applications are submitted through Council's online portal.

Most significant trees in Curl Curl — including Angophoras, Banksias, Melaleucas and Eucalypts — will require approval before any significant work. The lagoon environment adds further sensitivity to trees in the vicinity of that foreshore area. Penalties for unauthorised tree removal are substantial. We assess your trees at the quoting stage, advise whether a permit is required and can help with the application process where needed.

Common questions

Questions about tree work in Curl Curl

Do I need a council permit to remove a tree in Curl Curl?

Yes, in most cases. Northern Beaches Council requires development consent before removing or significantly pruning any tree that is 5 metres or more in height, has a canopy spread of 5 metres or more, or a trunk diameter of 30 cm or more at 1 metre above ground. The majority of established trees in Curl Curl — Angophoras, Banksias, Melaleucas and Eucalypts in particular — will meet these thresholds. We check this at the quoting stage and advise you clearly on the path forward. Unauthorised removal carries significant penalties.

Can salt spray and coastal winds actually damage trees?

Yes, and it's a real issue on ocean-facing blocks in Curl Curl. Salt spray dehydrates foliage and can cause progressive dieback in tree crowns over many years. Persistent onshore wind creates asymmetrical growth and weakens branch unions over time. Trees that look fine from the street may have structurally compromised limbs that are more likely to fail in a storm. A hazard assessment can identify these issues early, before they become a problem for your property.

How do you handle trees near Curl Curl Lagoon?

Carefully. Trees in and around the lagoon margin — particularly Melaleuca quinquenervia and Casuarina species — sit in an environmentally sensitive area and may be subject to additional constraints beyond the standard permit requirements. We assess these trees on-site, advise on what work is permissible and carry out the job in a way that minimises soil disturbance and runoff near the water's edge.

Is the on-site quote actually free?

Yes. We come to your property, look at the job in person and give you a written quote — no charge for the visit, no obligation to go ahead. We'd rather give you an accurate price on-site than estimate over the phone and adjust it later when we see the actual job.
