Established trees, tight blocks — Leichhardt done properly

Leichhardt is a suburb that wears its history on its streets. The Italian heritage that shaped this part of the Inner West over the second half of the twentieth century is still visible in the architecture, the street rhythms and — for our purposes — in the gardens. Italian-heritage households have traditionally been good gardeners, and many of the established properties in Leichhardt have mature garden trees that have been tended over decades: fruit trees, ornamental specimens, and older shade trees in back gardens that have grown well beyond their original planting intent. We respect these trees and approach every job with the question of what's genuinely needed, rather than what's easiest to sell.

The housing mix in Leichhardt runs from terrace houses on tight lots through to larger detached Federation and interwar houses on more generous blocks, particularly toward the edges of the suburb near Haberfield. The larger blocks often have the most substantial trees — mature Jacarandas, older shade trees and garden specimens that require a qualified arborist's assessment rather than just a quick quote from someone with a chainsaw and a ute. We bring AQF qualified arborist credentials to every job, and every pruning job is carried out to AS 4373-2007 Australian Standard.

Leichhardt's street trees are notable. Norton Street and the streets running off it have a well-established canopy of Jacarandas that flowers spectacularly each spring. These street trees belong to the council and any work on them needs to go through Inner West Council rather than us — but we can advise on the difference between a street tree and a garden tree, and we can carry out the maintenance work on your private trees that keeps them healthy and in good structural condition relative to the street canopy.

We're based on the Northern Beaches and travel to Leichhardt because it's a reasonable run and the work is worthwhile. You deal directly with Alex Price — not a call centre — and the quote you receive is based on what we actually see at your property. No hidden costs, no upselling on the day, no sending a labourer when you expected a qualified arborist.

Trees & vegetation in Leichhardt

Leichhardt's trees reflect its history as an established residential suburb that has been continuously gardened since the late nineteenth century. Jacaranda mimosifolia is the most recognised flowering tree in the suburb — Norton Street and many of the adjacent residential streets have mature Jacaranda canopies that are a genuine spectacle each November. On larger blocks, older garden shade trees are common: Camphor Laurels that were planted when they were fashionable rather than weedy, mature Liquidambars, and various ornamental trees that reached significant size before anyone thought to manage them. Citrus and fig trees are common in older back gardens, reflecting the horticultural traditions of the Italian community that shaped the suburb.

Street and garden planting across the newer parts of Leichhardt tends toward Lilly Pillies, Brush Box (Lophostemon confertus) and various native species that councils now favour for their lower maintenance requirements and ecological value. On the broader roads, Plane trees (Platanus x acerifolia) are well established and growing into increasingly significant specimens. Gardens that back onto the Iron Cove foreshore or that sit on the lower, wetter ground in the northern parts of the suburb sometimes contain species more typical of moister environments — Melaleucas and Casuarinas can appear in these locations alongside the usual garden palette. We identify whatever species you have on your block and advise accordingly.

Inner West Council tree permits

Leichhardt is part of the Inner West Council local government area. Council's tree preservation provisions require development consent before the removal or significant pruning of protected trees. The Inner West DCP sets specific thresholds, exemptions and processes — and they're different from those that apply in neighbouring councils like Canada Bay or the City of Sydney.

Tree protection in the Inner West is taken seriously, particularly for significant heritage trees, street trees and trees on visually prominent properties. Removing a tree without the required consent can result in orders to replant and substantial fines. Before committing to any tree work, it's worth checking whether a permit applies — we assess this at every on-site quote and will tell you clearly where you stand before any work begins.

Common questions

Questions about tree work in Leichhardt

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Leichhardt?

Yes, in most cases. Leichhardt is in the Inner West Council LGA, and Council's tree preservation order applies to a broad range of established trees. Before removing or significantly pruning a tree, you'll need to know whether development consent is required. We assess this at the quoting stage and will give you a clear answer before any work starts. Don't assume a tree is exempt without checking first.

Can you prune or remove Jacarandas in residential gardens?

Yes. We prune Jacarandas regularly in the Inner West — crown reduction, deadwooding, clearance cuts from buildings and fences. For removals, we assess whether a permit is required and advise accordingly. Jacarandas are significant trees in Leichhardt and Inner West Council takes a close interest in them, so it's worth getting the permit situation right before any major work. We guide you through that process.

What about old Camphor Laurels in established back gardens?

Camphor Laurels are a declared noxious weed species and Inner West Council generally supports their removal. However, they may still require a permit application depending on size and location. We assess each Camphor Laurel individually — some can be removed straightforwardly, others require a more staged approach because of their proximity to structures or neighbours. We'll tell you exactly what's needed and what the process looks like.

Do you charge a travel fee for coming to Leichhardt?
