Tree work in Newtown takes a particular kind of care

Newtown is one of those suburbs where the trees and the houses are so tightly woven together that you can't think about one without accounting for the other. Terrace houses sit cheek-by-jowl on narrow blocks, rear gardens are compact and often partly shaded, and the street trees — particularly the Jacarandas that line King Street and so many of the residential streets running off it — are a genuine part of what makes the suburb feel the way it does. We're based on the Northern Beaches, but we travel to Newtown regularly because the work here is interesting and the demand is real. When you call us, you speak directly to Alex Price, the qualified arborist who shows up and does the job.

The practical challenges of tree work in Newtown are real. Access is often tight — rear lanes, narrow side passages, no room to bring a chipper through the front gate. We carry out a lot of sectional dismantling work in the Inner West, carefully taking trees down in sections where a straight fell simply isn't possible. We use rigging techniques to lower limbs rather than drop them when there's a roof, a fence or a neighbour's yard directly below. This takes longer than a suburban removal on a large block, and we price honestly to reflect that. What we don't do is underquote and make up the difference later.

Many properties in Newtown have trees growing in close proximity to heritage-listed terrace houses, older brick fences and sandstone foundations. Root intrusion is a genuine issue on these tighter blocks, and we're frequently asked to assess whether a tree's root system poses a risk to an existing structure. We approach these assessments honestly — sometimes removal is warranted, but more often targeted root pruning or crown reduction is a more proportionate response. We'll tell you what we think, not what earns us the most money.

The Jacarandas in Newtown are worth mentioning specifically. They flower spectacularly in November and they're a significant part of the suburb's identity. They're also moderately large trees that need periodic pruning to maintain clearance from structures and to remove deadwood. We prune Jacarandas properly — to Australian Standard AS 4373-2007 — rather than topping them, which is the lazy approach that creates long-term structural problems. If you've got a Jacaranda that needs attention, we know how to handle it.

Trees & vegetation in Newtown

Newtown's tree canopy is a mixture of significant street trees and garden specimens on compact residential blocks. The Jacaranda mimosifolia is probably the most noticed tree in the suburb — it lines many streets and erupts in purple blossom each November, drawing visitors from across Sydney. Beyond the Jacarandas, established street trees include London Planes (Platanus x acerifolia) and various Ficus species on the broader arterial streets. On residential blocks you'll encounter a wide range of garden trees planted over generations: Liquidambars, ornamental Maples, Crepe Myrtles, and older specimens like Moreton Bay Figs that have sometimes outgrown their original setting entirely.

Native trees are less dominant in Newtown than on the Northern Beaches, but they appear in established gardens and newer plantings — Lilly Pillies, Blueberry Ash (Elaeocarpus reticulatus) and Brush Box (Lophostemon confertus) are all common choices for inner-urban gardens where something hardy and relatively tidy is wanted. Older gardens sometimes contain large Camphor Laurels, which are a declared noxious weed in NSW — removal is generally encouraged, but they still require permit assessment before any work starts. We can advise on the right approach for whatever species you have on your block.

Inner West Council tree permits

Tree work in Newtown falls under Inner West Council's jurisdiction. Council has a tree preservation order that applies to a broad range of trees across the local government area. Before removing or significantly pruning any tree, it's worth checking whether a permit is required — the thresholds and exemptions are specific to the Inner West DCP, and the rules differ from councils like Northern Beaches. Getting this wrong can result in substantial fines.

As a general rule, most established trees in Newtown — particularly those visible from the street, native species or trees above certain size thresholds — will require development consent before removal or major pruning. Some exemptions apply for dead trees, trees causing imminent danger, or certain introduced species. We assess permit requirements at the quoting stage and can advise on what's needed before you commit to any work. Call us to talk through your situation.

Common questions

Questions about tree work in Newtown

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Newtown?

In most cases, yes. Newtown falls under Inner West Council's tree preservation order. Before removing or significantly pruning an established tree, you'll need to check whether council approval is required. The Inner West DCP sets out specific size thresholds and species-based rules. We assess this at the quoting stage — don't start any work until you know where you stand, because the fines for unauthorised removal are significant.

Can you work on tight terrace blocks with limited access?

Yes, this is one of the things we do a lot of in the Inner West. Narrow side passages, rear lanes, no room for machinery through the front gate — these are standard conditions in Newtown. We use sectional dismantling, rope rigging and hand-lowering techniques to bring trees down safely when there's no room for a conventional fell. It takes more time, but it gets done properly.

Are you able to prune Jacarandas correctly?

Yes. Jacarandas are significant trees in Newtown and they respond well to proper pruning — deadwooding, selective crown thinning, clearance cuts from structures. What they don't respond well to is topping or heavy-handed lopping, which creates a flush of weakly attached regrowth and long-term structural problems. We prune to AS 4373-2007 Australian Standard, which means removing the right branches, at the right points, for the right reasons.
