Whale Beach's vegetation is characteristic of the Sydney sandstone coastal heathland that covers the Barrenjoey Peninsula. The dominant native species are Angophora costata (Sydney Red Gum), Banksia serrata (Saw Banksia), Banksia ericifolia (Heath Banksia), Hakea and various Casuarina species. These grow throughout the residential properties and form the bushland that borders and adjoins most blocks in the suburb. The sandstone substrate and coastal exposure shape the growth forms — trees here tend to be more compact and wind-shaped than their inland equivalents, but they can still be structurally complex, particularly older Angophora specimens with their characteristic gnarled canopies.
