Qualified arborist covering Willoughby and the North Shore. Established suburban canopy, Willoughby City Council permits handled properly.
Willoughby is a well-established North Shore suburb with leafy residential streets, good-sized blocks and gardens that have been accumulating trees for generations. We travel here from our Northern Beaches base as part of our regular North Shore coverage. It's a suburb where the arborist work tends to be thoughtful — managing large, established trees in gardens that are part of the reason people chose to live here — rather than straightforward clearing of unwanted vegetation.
Willoughby City Council administers the suburb and requires development consent for significant tree work under its DCP. We check permit requirements at the quoting stage and advise on the application process where consent is needed. Most established native trees and many significant ornamental trees in Willoughby will require a permit before major pruning or removal work proceeds. We prepare arborist assessment reports where council requires them to support an application.

Willoughby's vegetation reflects the North Shore sandstone geology and the suburb's long history of residential development. Angophora costata (Sydney Red Gum) is the dominant native canopy species, appearing on the ridge lines and through the more elevated parts of the suburb — recognisable by its smooth, salmon-pink bark and characteristic gnarled form. Eucalyptus species and Banksia appear in the remnant bush sections and in older gardens where native planting has been established over decades. These trees are protected under Willoughby City Council's DCP and require development consent before any significant pruning or removal work proceeds.
The established residential gardens of Willoughby contain a typical North Shore mix — Jacaranda trees are widespread and spectacular in late spring, along with Liquidambar, Camphor Laurel and various Prunus and Pyrus ornamental species. Photinia and Pittosporum hedges are common boundary treatments, and Lilly Pilly is widely used in both hedge and specimen form. Many of Willoughby's larger properties have mature garden trees that have been growing for fifty years or more — when these need professional attention, the job needs to be done by someone with the knowledge and equipment to carry it out without damaging the rest of the garden. That's what we do.
Willoughby falls within the Willoughby City Council local government area. Willoughby City Council requires development consent before removing or significantly pruning trees that meet size criteria set out in the Willoughby Development Control Plan — generally trees with a height of 5 metres or more, a canopy spread of 3 metres or more, or a trunk diameter of 10 cm or more measured at 1 metre above ground. Willoughby also has heritage conservation areas where additional controls may apply to tree works.
We check permit requirements at every site visit in Willoughby. Where a permit is needed, we advise on the application process and prepare arborist assessment reports where Willoughby City Council requires them. Call us before planning any significant tree work — understanding the permit position is the right starting point, and a site visit is free.

Do I need a Willoughby City Council permit to remove a tree?
Yes, for trees meeting Willoughby City Council's DCP thresholds — generally 5 metres or more in height, a canopy spread of 3 metres or more, or a trunk diameter of 10 cm or more at 1 metre above ground. If your property is in a heritage conservation area, additional requirements may apply. We check permit requirements at every site visit and advise accordingly. Call before planning significant tree work.
Can you prune a large established garden tree without damaging the surrounding garden?
Yes — careful pruning of established garden trees without damage to the surroundings is a standard part of the work we do. We plan the rigging and cutting approach to control where material lands, protect adjacent planting and garden features, and leave the site clean. The on-site assessment includes a look at the working space and what safeguards are needed before we start. In established North Shore gardens, this planning step is always worth doing.
The Jacaranda in our garden is getting too large — can it be reduced rather than removed?
Usually yes. Crown reduction is a legitimate approach for Jacaranda — reducing the overall size of the canopy while maintaining a natural branch structure and not leaving stubs. What we won't do is top a Jacaranda (flat-cutting the top), which destroys its natural form and causes structural problems. Proper crown reduction takes more skill and planning than topping, but the result is a healthier tree that maintains its character. We'll advise on what's achievable at the site visit.
