Oxford Falls — serious trees on serious blocks that need serious experience

Oxford Falls is one of the most distinctive suburbs on the Northern Beaches. Elevated, semi-rural in character, with large blocks and significant bushland on multiple sides, it sits in a different category to the denser coastal suburbs. Properties here often have tens — and in some cases hundreds — of trees, a genuine bushland interface and a much larger scale of work than is typical in more urban parts of the peninsula. When you call The Living Canopy, you deal directly with Alex Price, a qualified arborist who has worked in Oxford Falls regularly and understands the scale and character of tree work here.

The scale of trees in Oxford Falls is meaningful. This is not suburban garden pruning territory — many properties have large mature eucalypts in the 15 to 25 metre range, and access to some trees requires planning. We carry the equipment and have the team structure to handle large-scale work, including technical rigging for trees that can't be felled in the open and sectional dismantling where the landing zone is constrained by structures or vegetation.

Bushfire risk management is a genuine consideration for Oxford Falls properties. The Asset Protection Zone (APZ) requirements under the NSW Rural Fire Service guidelines apply to many properties in Oxford Falls, and routine hazard reduction work around structures is both sensible and, in some cases, legally required. We carry out hazard reduction work to the appropriate standards, and we can advise on what's required versus what's permitted under the DCP and permit framework.

Emergency response is also critical in Oxford Falls. When a significant storm drops large limbs on a bush property, the scale of the debris can be considerable. We respond quickly, work efficiently and leave the site in a safe, manageable state. Call 0452 030 077 directly for urgent jobs.

Trees & vegetation in Oxford Falls

Oxford Falls supports one of the most diverse tree communities of any residential area on the Northern Beaches. The elevated position and deeper soils in some areas allow species like Eucalyptus saligna (Sydney Blue Gum) and Eucalyptus pilularis (Blackbutt) to reach impressive heights — these are large-forest species that reach their potential on the better soils in Oxford Falls and surrounding areas. On the more exposed sandstone ridges, dry sclerophyll species dominate: Angophora costata, Eucalyptus haemastoma, Banksia serrata and Banksia ericifolia. The valleys and creek lines within the suburb support a different community, with Casuarina cunninghamiana (River She-oak) and various Acacia species forming the riparian understorey.

The bushland in and around Oxford Falls is genuinely intact in some areas, with Sydney Turpentine-Ironbark Forest community represented near the suburb's bushland interfaces. This is a recognised ecological community of conservation significance. Properties that back onto or include areas of this community may be subject to additional constraints on vegetation clearing and tree work. Large individual trees — particularly Syncarpia glomulifera (Turpentine) with its distinctive fibrous bark, and ironbark eucalypts — should be assessed carefully before any work is contemplated. We have the knowledge to identify these species and the experience to advise on appropriate management approaches.

Northern Beaches Council tree permits

Northern Beaches Council requires development consent under their Development Control Plan (DCP Part B13 — Tree and Vegetation Management) before removing or significantly pruning any tree that meets one or more of the following thresholds: 5 metres or more in height, a canopy spread of 5 metres or more, or a trunk diameter of 30 cm or more measured at 1 metre above ground level. Applications are submitted through Council's online portal.

In Oxford Falls, the permit requirements are extensive — virtually every significant tree on residential blocks will meet the threshold criteria, and bushland-interface properties may have additional vegetation protections. APZ hazard reduction has specific exemption pathways but must be carried out to the applicable standards. We assess your situation fully at the quoting stage and can guide you through what is required, what is exempt and what the application process involves.

Common questions

Questions about tree work in Oxford Falls

I have a lot of large trees on my block — do I need a permit for all of them?

Potentially yes, for any tree that meets Northern Beaches Council's threshold criteria: 5 metres or more in height, a canopy spread of 5 metres or more, or a trunk diameter of 30 cm or more at 1 metre above ground. On a large Oxford Falls block, many of your significant trees will meet at least one of these criteria. We carry out a full assessment during the on-site visit, identify which trees require permits and advise on the application process. For large-scale clearance or hazard reduction, there may be specific permit pathways that apply.

Can I clear vegetation around my house for bushfire protection in Oxford Falls?

Yes, but within a framework. Properties in bushfire-prone areas can carry out Asset Protection Zone (APZ) management under the NSW Rural Fire Service guidelines, which provides some exemption from standard tree permit requirements for hazard reduction work within specified distances of a dwelling. However, the exemptions are not unlimited — they apply to specific work types within specific distance zones, and some species and situations may still require assessment. We can advise on what's permissible for your specific property and carry out the work to the appropriate standard.

How do you handle large removals in Oxford Falls where the trees can't be felled straight?

The same way we handle complex removals anywhere — with qualified climbers, proper rigging equipment and a planned sequence for sectional dismantling. On a large Oxford Falls property with big eucalypts near structures or fences, we assess the landing zones, rig the sections that can't be dropped freely and lower them in a controlled sequence. This takes longer than a simple fell, but it's the right approach for constrained sites. We price for the actual job, not an optimistic version of it.

Do you carry out hazard assessments for large trees?

Yes. A proper arboricultural hazard assessment looks at the crown structure, main stem, root zone and any evidence of decay, structural defects or damage — it's not a guess from the driveway. We assess large trees using established arboricultural methodology and can provide a written report identifying the risk profile and recommended management options. For large eucalypts on Oxford Falls properties that are near structures or over areas of regular human activity, this kind of assessment is a sensible precaution.
