Davidson's trees deserve an arborist who knows what they're doing

Davidson is one of the Northern Beaches' most consistently leafy residential areas. The suburb runs along Warringah Road, Kelvin Road, De Burgh Road and Penrose Road, backing onto the western edge of Garigal National Park. Blocks here tend to be generous, with good setbacks, and the original vegetation has largely been retained or supplemented over decades of residential occupation. The result is one of the most mature and continuous suburban tree canopies in the area.

The trees in Davidson are mostly in the 40–60 year age bracket — the age at which many species move into the phase of life characterised by progressive structural change. Crown dieback, limb failures and changes to root architecture become more common as trees age. This doesn't mean the trees should be removed — many mature trees are structurally sound and ecologically valuable — but it does mean they deserve professional structural assessment rather than being left to chance. We assess mature trees using recognised arboricultural frameworks and advise on proactive management to extend their safe useful life.

Tree root systems in Davidson are a common source of property damage. On properties with pools, driveways and structures built in the 1970s–80s, roots from large native trees have had decades to grow into paving joints, drainage lines and pool walls. We can assess root impact, advise on root-barrier installation, carry out root pruning where appropriate, or — where the tree genuinely cannot be retained safely — remove it properly and grind the stump below the surface.

Like Belrose and Frenchs Forest, properties along Davidson's western boundary may have trees originating from Garigal National Park. These Crown Land trees require NPWS consent, not a Council permit, for any work — and we identify this as part of our standard site assessment.

Trees & vegetation in Davidson

Davidson's woodland is characterised by a mix of hardwood eucalypt species suited to the sandstone and transitional soils. Corymbia maculata (Spotted Gum) is a prominent species on the deeper, more fertile soils — its smooth, mottled bark turning striking shades of grey, white and yellow as old bark is shed. Eucalyptus pilularis (Blackbutt) is also common on the better-drained slopes, a tall, straight tree that can reach 40 metres at maturity. Eucalyptus paniculata (Grey Ironbark) appears on the upper ridge positions where soils are shallowest and most exposed. Angophora costata (Sydney Red Gum) is found throughout on the characteristic pink sandstone outcrops and ridgelines.

In Davidson's established garden settings, a range of exotic and garden species accompany the natives — mature Jacarandas, liquid ambers, ornamental figs, and various ornamental trees planted in the 1970s–80s are common. These older garden trees can be just as significant as the natives in terms of their contribution to the streetscape and the property value, and they deserve the same quality of care.

Northern Beaches Council tree permits — Davidson

Northern Beaches Council's DCP Part B13 applies in Davidson. Any tree that is 5 metres or more in height, has a canopy spread of 5 metres or more, or has a trunk diameter of 30cm or more at 1m above ground requires development consent before removal or significant pruning. Given the maturity and size of many trees in Davidson, the great majority of significant trees on residential properties will fall within these thresholds.

For properties adjacent to Garigal National Park on Davidson's western boundary: trees on Crown Land require a separate National Parks and Wildlife Service consent. Tree ownership — particularly at rear boundary fencelines — should always be confirmed before any work is planned. We include tree ownership identification as a standard part of our site assessment at no extra charge.

Frequently asked questions — Davidson

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Davidson?

Most trees in Davidson fall under Northern Beaches Council DCP Part B13. Any tree 5 metres or taller, with a trunk diameter over 30 cm at 1 metre height, or a canopy spread of 5 metres or more requires development consent before removal or significant pruning. Exempt species and trees within 3 metres of an approved structure may not need a permit. We check permit requirements at every quote. See our Northern Beaches tree permit guide for more detail.

How much does tree removal cost in Davidson?

Tree removal in Davidson typically ranges from $400 for a small tree to $3,500+ for large complex jobs. Price depends on tree size, species, site access and proximity to structures or power lines. All quotes are free — we visit your property, assess the job and give you a written price with no obligation. See our 2026 cost guide for typical price ranges.

How quickly can you get to Davidson for urgent work?

For genuine emergencies — storm damage, fallen trees, or trees posing an immediate risk to life or property — we respond the same day.
